Figure 01

The Figure 01 is the first-generation humanoid robot from Figure AI, a Sunnyvale (later San Jose), California startup founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock, the entrepreneur behind Archer Aviation and Vettery. Figure 01 was the company's proof-of-concept platform — a battery-powered bipedal robot built to walk, lift, and manipulate objects in human environments, and the robot that put Figure AI on the map with viral demonstrations of coffee-making and OpenAI-powered conversation. It was superseded by the Figure 02 in August 2024 and has since been followed by the Figure 03.

Availability

Figure 01 was never sold commercially. It was an internal development and demonstration platform. There is no list price, no reseller, and no purchasing path — every public reference to "buying" a Figure 01 points to either the Figure 02 or aggregator estimates that do not reflect a real transaction. Figure AI's commercial focus is its current-generation hardware.

For context on the company behind it: Figure AI raised a $675 million Series B in early 2024 (Microsoft, the OpenAI Startup Fund, NVIDIA, Jeff Bezos, Intel Capital) at a $2.6 billion valuation, followed by a roughly $1 billion Series C in September 2025 that lifted its valuation to a reported $39 billion. The company has stated production ambitions in the range of 100,000 robots over four years from its "BotQ" facility — but those targets apply to later-generation hardware, not Figure 01.

Figure 01's most visually distinctive trait was its exposed cabling and electronics, a deliberate choice that made the prototype easy to test and modify. Reported specs vary slightly between sources; the figures below reflect the most commonly cited values.

Notable capabilities

Figure 01 took its first steps and began manipulating objects within roughly a year of development. Its best-known demonstrations were an autonomous coffee-making routine using a consumer Keurig machine, and a March 2024 speech-to-speech demo — built with OpenAI — in which the robot identified an apple as "something to eat," handed it over, and narrated its reasoning in natural conversation.

Model Breakdown

Figure 01 shipped as a single development configuration. It was not offered in consumer/EDU tiers the way some research robots are — it existed solely to validate Figure AI's hardware and AI stack before the company moved to a production-oriented design.

Buyer's Guide: What to Know

You cannot buy one. Figure 01 is a closed chapter. If you are evaluating Figure AI hardware, the relevant platforms are the Figure 02 (covered below) and the newer Figure 03, which Figure has positioned toward home use.

It matters as a benchmark, not a product. Figure 01's significance is historical: it proved Figure AI could go from founding to a walking, manipulating, conversational humanoid in under two years, which is what attracted its tier-one investors.

Exposed wiring was intentional. Don't read the prototype's rough appearance as a flaw — the integrated-cabling redesign in Figure 02 was a planned step toward a production machine.

Figure 01 vs Similar Robots

• Figure 01 vs Figure 02: Figure 02 is the direct successor — same general stature, but with fully integrated cabling, roughly 50% more battery capacity, custom motors, ~3× onboard compute, and 16-DOF dexterous hands. Figure 02 is the one with real factory deployments.
• Figure 01 vs Tesla Optimus: Both are camera-centric general-purpose humanoids backed by large funding. Optimus targets a far lower price at scale; Figure prioritized rapid capability demonstrations and an OpenAI partnership.
• Figure 01 vs Unitree G1: Different categories entirely — the G1 is a compact, purchasable research platform; Figure 01 was an industrial proof-of-concept never offered for sale.
