REEM-A was the first robot built by PAL Robotics, the Barcelona, Spain robotics company founded in 2004 by six engineers. REEM-A originated from a project to build a robotic arm that could play chess, and grew into PAL Robotics' first humanoid robot — an early demonstration platform that established the company and its long-running "REEM" line. PAL Robotics' humanoid program has been associated with funding connected to the United Arab Emirates.

Significance
